Bring your family to the TAMIU Lamar Bruni Vergara Planetarium Saturday, June 23 to watch “Despicable Me,” during Family movie day. This week, six TAMIU students will join a select group of 41 students from across the nation selected by The Center for Public Leadership (CPL) at Harvard Kennedy School’s (HKS) third installment of its Latino Leadership Initiative (LLI), taking place at Harvard University. As you make your way through your summer reading list, put an exciting thriller by a local author on the top of your stack of books. A murder mystery, “Suicide Kings,” written by TAMIU associate professor of psychology Dr. Christopher Ferguson, takes readers on an adventure set in Florence, Italy, during the Renaissance. -

Research findings by the U.S. Department of Education indicate that among public, four-year or above universities, TAMIU has one of the nation’s lowest net prices. Recognizing a “tireless champion for Texas higher education and TAMIU,” the University named its University Success Center for State Senator Judith Zaffirini in ceremonies Monday, June 11 in the lobby of the new Senator Judith Zaffirini Student Success Center. University students, faculty and friends gathered to bid David VerMilyea, affectionately known as “Mr. V,” good-bye as he retired after 42 years of service. VerMilyea is TAMIU’s director of international student services at TAMIU. -

Hundreds of outstanding Laredo ‘Class of 2012’ high school graduates will be ‘Powered by TAMIU’ this Fall. TAMIU awarded them $2.92 million in scholarships to assist them throughout their four years of University education. Escape the hot weather and take in a full-length animated feature film with your family or explore ancient worlds, the future and outer space or take a date to experience a classic rock album like never before at the tamiu Lamar Bruni Vergara Planetarium this summer. Two TAMIU students each received $1,000 scholarships and recognition for their academic excellence from the Laredo Rotary Club at a May ceremony. A TAMIU graduate student and her faculty mentor have been selected by a program review team to present their collaborative research at the 2012 Texas Autism Research Conference in Austin in July. -

TAMIU will begin to observe its summer work schedule starting today, May 31 through Wednesday, Aug. 8. The TAMIU Office of Human Resources will be recognized with the first Innovation Award in Human Resources Practices from the Texas Higher Education Human Resources Association (THEHRA) at its summer Conference in Corpus Christi this June. TAMIU Dustdevil Athletics is putting a new face forward…its web site has been redesigned and relaunched. -

The University will be closed in a State-authorized observance of Memorial Day, Monday, May 28. The Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library will also be closed Sunday, May 27. Registration is currently underway for TAMIU's summer camps. TAMIU recently dedicated its Dual Language Lab, whichi will focus on dual language exploration, study and training. TAMIU premiered a new documentary film that shares the legacy of Laredo’s Jewish community has helped inaugurate the new South Texas Jewish Heritage Collection at TAMIU. -

Congratulations to the winners of the TAMIU Lamar Bruni Vergara and Guillermo Benavides Z. Academic Conference. A local artist’s piece showing in West Texas won over judges and the public in a competition which included works by 87 artists. The San Angelo National Ceramic judges recognized Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) art instructor Angela Carbone for her piece, “Stars and Stripes,” with two awards at the San Angelo National Ceramic Competition—one of 17 Merit Awards and the People’s Choice Award. Trustees of the Delfina and Josefina Alexander Family Foundation announced a gift of $500,000 to TAMIU that will support student scholarships and emergencies. Students who are awarded a scholarship under this gift agreement will be known as the “Delfina and Josefina Alexander Scholars.” Get Powered by TAMIU this Summer and Fall. A TAMIU faculty researcher and TAMIU students are conducting an important binational study featuring Laredo research looking at the relationship between diabetes and health literacy. Dr. Suko Lee, TAMIU associate professor, is part of the study sponsored by TAMIU, Texas A&M University and the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México. The study is collecting data in Laredo, Bryan-College Station, San Antonio and Mexico City. TAMIU employees will spend part the afternoon and part of the morning at the University’s annual TAMIU Enrichment Day, Friday, May 18 starting at 11:30 a.m. University employees will also begin the summer work schedule Thursday, May 31 and end Wednesday, Aug. 8. Friday is Generation TX Day, an opportunity for students to affirm their belief in higher education by wearing their favorite college T-shirt. Get three times the amount of laughs for the price of one this weekend at TAMIU. The theatre production class presents “Ha!” a comedy by Rich Orloff Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5 at 8 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Theatre. The TAMIU student organization, Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), earned the honor of “Regional Champions” at the SIFE USA Regional Competition in Dallas. The team will travel to Kansas City, Mo., for the National Competition, May 22-24. More than 500 students will participate in Spring Commencement at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12. -

The Beaumont Foundation of America announced the establishment of a scholarship endowment at that honors Carlos and Judith Zaffirini and is dedicated to providing scholarship assistance to first-generation TAMIU students. Highlighting the announcement of the Endowed Scholarship was the introduction of the first TAMIU student to be assisted by the Carlos and Judy Zaffirini Endowed Scholarship, Rafael E. Contreras III. TAMIU senior, Melissa Treviño, will be the featured violin soloist with the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra on Sunday April 22 having won the 3rd Annual Concerto Competition. TAMIU will host a book signing for Laredo native María Hilda Piñon, author of “The Willows of Corona,” on Tuesday, April 24 from 6:30 - 8 p.m. in the Helen Richter Watson Gallery, inside the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library. -

Support student scholarships while enjoying an enchanted evening at “Encanto Español” Saturday, March 31 in the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Theatre. A group of 150 freshmen girls from Laredo’s two school districts as well as St. Augustine and Harmony Academy of Science will participate in a young women’s conference at TAMIU in April. An impressive collaboration by the TAMIU Chamber Singers, Laredo Community College Mixed Choir and the Chamber Orchestra of Laredo (C.O.O.L.) will present a free concert Wednesday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts’ (CFPA) Recital Hall. Scientist and best-selling author David Eagleman will delve into the mysteries of the subconscious mind as he presents a lecture Thursday, April 5 at 7 p.m. in the CFPA Recital Hall. TAMIU will remember fallen alumni, students, faculty and staff at the second “Celebration of Life” memorial observation Thursday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the CFPA Recital Hall. -

TAMIU students and faculty will observe Spring Break beginning Monday, March 12 through Sunday, March 18. A group of 11 TAMIU students will travel to Vancouver, Canada during spring break to participate the World Model United Nations Conference (WorldMUN), the most diverse college-level model United Nations Conference in the world. Hone your leadership skills and represent a student body of more than 7,000 students during the upcoming 2012-13 school year by running for an office for the TAMIU Student Government Association. Student hearings for proposed tuition and fee increases will be held Thursday, Feb. 23 and Monday, Feb. 27 at noon in the Student Center rotunda. Assistant professor of education, Dr. Israel Peniel will present a special lecture for Black History Month. Tapping into a shared pride of education and work ethic that they trace to Texas A&M University, family members of Laredo’s Arguindegui Oil Company recently initiated the Arguindegui Oil Company Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Endowment Fund at TAMIU. In official figures reported to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, TAMIU is posting a Spring 2012 enrollment of 6,533 students. -

Union Pacific donated $30,000 to TAMIU for the TAMIU Union Pacific STEM Endowed Scholarship and for the Lamar Bruni Vergara Planetarium. "Celebrating Shakespeare" continues through Sunday, Feb. 12. TAMIU will offer an LSAT review course. The upcoming IBC Keynote Speaker Series will explore "nearshoring." -

TAMIU Spirit Week 2012 continues with a pre-game tailgate today to prepare for the men's and women's basketball games against the St. Edward's Hilltoppers. Events continue through Saturday with the Dustdevil baseball team taking on the UTPB Falcons at 2 p.m. The TAMIU Office of Continuing Education start their SAT and GRE prep classes Saturday. -

The first faculty art show in 5 years on campus is on display at the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Gallery. There will be reception at 6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 26. The exhibit will be on display through Friday, March 2. TAMIU will host TAMIU STEM Day, Friday, Jan. 27. NASA astronaut Michael E. Fossum is the featured guest speaker. The Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra will offer "Movie Magic" Sunday, Jan. 29 at 3 p.m. in the TAMIU CFPA Recital Hall. TAMIU will host "Shakespeare Week" Feb. 2 - 12. -

Late registration for Spring 2012 is underway at schedule.tamiu.edu. The University will be closed Monday, Jan. 16 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Resolutions Week will give students the opportunity to meet their new year's goals. Spanish Dance Techniques, a continuing education non-credit course, will be offered Spring 2012. -
